Thanksgiving was our first holiday away from our family and just when we thought that it would be just the two of us with some sad Cornish hens our dear friends Jerry and Rebecca invited us to spend Thanksgiving with them and Rebecca’s family in West Memphis, Arkansas. It was a blessing and we were very grateful for the invitation. On Wednesday afternoon we dropped the pups off to be boarded and drove 6 hours out to Arkansas.
Rebecca’s parents were too kind and fed us more food then we could handle. Every morning we gathered at the table for breakfast and every evening they stuffed us full of more delicious food.
Here are just a few highlights of our Thanksgiving weekend.
We made a sweet cuddly friend named Matty, short for Matthew.
A cuddly anti-social friend named Harry. I swear he is giving me the evil eye.
The boys tossed around a football.
There was this evil snack put out. It was a cheese log covered in some form of sweetened and savory pecans. It was pure evil, I couldn’t stop eating it. Thankfully my hostess was kind enough to finish it off for me.
In this cozy Arkansas home there was quite a bit of southern charm and;
lots of little southern details.
And of course there was food, lots of food. One thing that really stuck out, because I had never had or seen it before, was this strawberry/pretzel “salad”. I put the word salad in quotes because this isn’t what I usually think of when I hear the word salad.
It is more like a dessert but it was on the food table, not on the dessert table. Obed and I were very confused. It had 3 layers, one of crushed pretzels, another of whip cream and some strawberry gelatin. It was a pretty tasty “salad”. It is the only salad Obed has ever had seconds and thirds of.
Of course we had turkey, but not just one turkey, we had three. One turkey was roasted in a bag and;
the other two were slowly smoked with hickory wood for about 8 hours.
Obed was very interested in the smoked turkey and very eager to get a piece of it.
Poor Matty was put outside for the birds protection.
Thank you again for blessing us with your invitation. We were very thankful for you hospitality and for good friends.
Now if you excuse me I have to run to Switzerland and back to work off all the food you fed me. 😀 See you in a few.
